Dept. of Mechanical Engineering

From the very inception of the college in 1958 the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been instrumental in molding a multitude of engineers, each unique in his own right. The Department, which began with student strength of 45 at the undergraduate level, can now boast of the 100 strong student-bodies under its tutelage. A production Engineering steam was also introduced in the year 1981,to meet the growing demand of the industry for highly skilled workforce.30 students are currently working towards their bachelor's degree in this stream. A part-time course in Mechanical Engineering is also offered to as many as 40 scholars, as a part of the continuing education.

The Department has undertaken a number of projects in the emerging fields of Robotics and Non-conventional energy with assistance from the department of Science and Technology. The students enthusiastically undertake project in such exciting emerging fields like Sterling and Erickson cycles, guided by the teachers of the Department.


The Department offers a Post graduate Course in Industrial Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering which leads to a Master degree in technology. The projects and Research work undertaken by the students are true to the intuitive and inquisitive spirit upheld by one and all.

Course Details




1. B.Tech.- Mechanical Engineering (Full Time Graduate Course)


B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Programme of our college is affiliated to University of Kerala.


Admission Eligibility


  1. Candidates with a pass in the Plus - Two Examination of Kerala Higher Secondary Board or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto, securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together are eligible for admission.
  2. Admission is made by a selection committee constituted by the Government of Kerala
  3. Reservation to SC,ST and other communities are available as per rules and regulations of the Government from time to time
  4. 15% of the seats are reserved under Management quota . Those who want to get admission under the Management quota should apply to the management and qualify the Engineering entrance examination conducted by Commissioner of Entrance Examination; Government of Kerala.

Duration of the Course:


The programme is conducted in eight semesters.


2. B.Tech.- Mechanical Engineering (Part Time Graduate Course)


B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Programme of our college is affiliated to University of Kerala.


Admission Eligibility


  1. Candidates should be Indian nationals and have passed the Diploma in Engineering of a recognized University / Board / Institution in the respective branch of engineering after undergoing regular institutional course of three years and should be in employment in the engineering profession for two years preceding the date of application after passing the diploma examination.There is no limit with regard to each.
  2. Admission is made by a selection committee constituted by the Government of Kerala
  3. Reservation to SC,ST and other communities are available as per rules and regulations of the Government from time to time
  4. 15% of the seats are reserved under Management quota . Those who want to get admission under the Management quota should apply to the management and qualify the Engineering entrance examination conducted by Commissioner of Entrance Examination; Government of Kerala

3. M.Tech.- Industrial Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering (Full Time Post Graduate Course)


M.Tech.- Industrial Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering of our college is affiliated to University of Kerala.


Admission Eligibility


  1. A pass in B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 60% of Marks
  2. Admission is made by a selection committee constituted by the Government of Kerala
  3. Out of seven seats two seats are reserved for SC/ST Candidates subject to availability with 5% reduction in marks, as per Govt of India's direction
  4. Minimum marks for M.Tech admission for AMIE / AMTETE candidates shall be 55% of the aggregate of Section B of the respective examination
  5. They should have a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the field and a valid GATE score in the respective branch

Duration of the Course:


The programme is conducted in four semesters.

10. COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD) CENTRE


Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) centre of the Mechanical Engineering Department is equipped with high end computers and softwares. Post graduate students of the department are given training in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The facilities available are also being utilized by the under graduate and post graduate students and research scholars of the college for doing their project/thesis work.


The ongoing consultancy projects include the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC), Valiamala, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space and Government of India.

Department of Mechanical engineering


Workshop forms an integral part of the department of mechanical engineering as it is heavily involved in carrying out the manufacturing activities with the help of some sophisticated equipments for the research activities in the department as well as for the undergraduate training on workshop courses for the students throughout the institute in every semester. With the assistance of quality supporting staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students are able to carry out the fabrication work for their B.Tech, M.Tech as well as PhD project and thesis work.


Mission


To provide students, faculty, and staff, a safe and innovative development and production machining facility that promotes, supports, and enhance the mission of the College of Engineering.


Following are the Shops/Machines in the central workshop


  1. Machine Shop

    The Engineering Machine Shop contains lathes, mills, Grinders, shapers, Drilling machines, and CNC Machines with which to work many types of materials, including plastics, fiberglass and metals. EMS works with students, faculty, and staff in the College of Engineering as providing concept development, project design, and prototyping services. Students are taught how to use the equipment safely and then use the machines for class projects.

  2. Fitting Shop

    In fitting shop various processes are performed on metals to give them desired shape and size and fit them with mating part.

  3. Carpentry Shop

    In carpentry shop students learn to do wood-work like to make wooden furniture, wooden articles etc

  4. Welding Shop

    Provides hands on introduction to the common welding processes used in industry. Course will include oxyacetylene, MIG, TIG, and Argon welding as well as appropriate safety procedures.

  5. Smithy Shop

    Smithy Shop has various furnaces for heating purpose, different Forging Tools such as Hammer. Shaping Tools like anvils other Holding Tools, Tongs, Chisels, fullers etc. Here the students are emphasized on the correct dimensions and proper shape of the work piece.

  6. Sheet Metal Shop

    Provides with the necessary skills and techniques to work in the sheet metal fabrication occupation, giving you instruction in the use of portable power tools, sheet metal working equipment and arc welding and cutting equipment. Learn to create, read and interpret blueprints and specifications.

  7. Foundry shop

    Provides molding & Casting Process as well as appropriate safety procedures.

  8. Plumbing shop

    This workshop is intended to introduce on practice of plumbing maintenance issues, tools, materials, and diagnosis and repair. Discussions will be followed by hands-on exercises where participants will use tools and materials to practice what they have learned and gain a better understanding of techniques.


Library


The Mechanical Engineering Department has a Department Library.Almost all the books prescribed in the syllabus are available in the library. Project reports and seminar papers are also available in the library.


Merits


  1. The University of Kerala has approved the department as a research centre. Four of the faculty members have been approved as Research supervisors for Ph.D programme under the University of Kerala.
  2. Research projects of the research scholars are presently under various stages of progress.
  3. The department has shown steady progress during the past five years quantitatively and qualitatively.
  4. Two faculty members acquired Ph. D. under QIP from IITs, Five faculty members have acquired M. Tech under QIP from IITs
  5. Two members acquired M. Tech from the institution under Part time programme. One faculty member acquired Ph. D. from University of Kerala.
  6. Two faculty members are undergoing M. Tech under QIP at IIT, Three members are doing Ph. D under QIP at IITs and Four faculty members are doing Ph.D by research on part-time basis.
  7. The AICTE and University of Kerala had granted approval to start a new post graduate course in "Computer Integrated Manufacturing".
  8. Most of the teachers have been deputed for short-term courses.
  9. Our students have been maintaining top ranks among the colleges under the University of Kerala.
  10. A good percentage of the outgoing students are placed in very good establishments before they leave the campus through the Training and placement centre.
  11. Most of the students are well placed.
  12. The department maintain very high results in the examinations.
  13. The department have successfully completed projects under TAPTEC and MODROB.
  14. New proposals have been given under the above schemes.
  15. The CAD/CAM centre has been developed with new commercial software.
  16. The students and faculty members have attended seminars and symposia.
  17. Faculty members have published a number of papers in refereed journals.
  18. Facilities have been improved and a new block of building has been added. A new seminar room is also built with all modern facilities.
  19. Proposal has been approved by the AICTE and University of Kerala for starting a new M. Tech course in Computer Integrated Manufacturing and awaiting for sanction by the Govt. of Kerala.
  20. Training and Placement cell of the institution has been working under the supervision of a Professor from the department.
  21. National Level Technical Symposium for Engineering students (MEXSYM) is being conducted by the department every year.
  22. Auto Show 2001 was another event organized by the department successfully exposing the students to the recent developments in the Automobile industry.
  23. Prof.K.Balachandra Sarma has been nominated as the Dean (Faculty of Engineering and Technology), University of Kerala.

Continuing Education Programmes


Department has organized summer/winter schools for faculty members of engineering with ISTE aid.


EDP Programme


Our faculty members have given guest lectures for EDP and also very actively participating in such programmes.


Quality Improvement Programmes Conducted In The Last Five Years


  1. Extension programmes including training programmes for engineers in industries.

    A training programme on "Assembling and Testing of window Air conditioners" was organized for engineers from KEL, Kundara, by the Department.

  2. Staff development programmes for teachers of other Institutions

    An ISTE summer school on "Contributions to Technology Development from Space Research" had been conducted in collaboration with VSSC, Trivandrum.

    New proposals for summer/winter schools have been submitted to ISTE this year

  3. Department's contribution to curriculum development.

    Faculty members of the Department participated in the curriculum development committee of the University of Kerala for preparing the scheme and syllabus of the course.

    The Department involved in the preparation of the revised syllabi for B.Tech-Mechanical, Production, Industrial and Automobile engineering from 1998 admissions onwards under University of Kerala.

    Syllabus revision is going on for 2003 admissions onwards for B.Tech Mechanical, Production, Industrial and Automobile Engg. under University of Kerala.
