Software Lab

The objective of the lab is to introduce students to solving process simulation problems using C++, MATLAB and UNISIM. A basic background in Numerical Methods and Chemical Engineering is expected, though all the key concepts required for the lab will be reviewed during the course. The first part of this course will focus on C++ and MATLAB, which is a powerful language for engineering applications. Starting with basics of C++ and MATLAB, we will review key computational techniques relevant to those languages and use them for simulation and analysis. The second part will cover process simulation using the UNISIM package, which is an industry standard for process simulations. Numerical differentiation and integration. ODE-IVP: Understanding Runge-Kutta Method. RK Method in Multiple Variables. ODE-IVP: Solving and Application to Transient System Reactor simulations. Linear Algebra and Linear System Analysis. Eigen vectors, directionality, linear stability using C++ Language. Linear / Nonlinear Equations. Nonlinear equations in multiple variables. Non-linear analysis. Simulation of non-linear systems. Regression and parameter estimation. Reaction kinetics, physical property estimation. Introduction to Unisim. Simulation of individual equipments. Simulation of flow sheet. Design specification and sensitivity analysis. Equation oriented approach.
