DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Department of Chemistry has been an integral part of TKM College of Engineering since 1958 and serves as a key supporting department for all engineering disciplines. A sound understanding of chemistry and engineering materials is essential for solving engineering problems across various branches. The department offers Engineering Chemistry courses to students of all engineering programs and supports the Chemical Engineering program through courses up to the third semester. The department is actively involved in research on the synthesis and applications of nanomaterials, natural product drug discovery and pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry and is recognized for doctoral research in Chemistry by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. The department maintains two well-equipped laboratories: the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory, which caters to students of all engineering branches, and the Chemistry Laboratory for Process Engineers, designed for Chemical Engineering students. In addition to teaching and research, the department provides guidance for student projects and seminars and actively contributes to the academic and co-curricular activities of the institution.

Message from the Head of Department
Welcome to the Chemistry Department! Department of Chemistry plays crucial role as one of the major supporting departments and deliver a solid foundation in chemical science to prepare students for a successful engineering career. The teaching module comprises class room lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions. The teaching is based on application of innovative strategies, comprehensive lectures, regular assignments and interaction between teachers and students. The department is proud to have highly qualified and dedicated faculty members and non-teaching staff. The faculty members are actively involved in basic and applied research and aims to build partnerships with premier institutes and the industry.
Area of Research
- Synthesis and characterization of advanced nanomaterials, including metal nanoclusters, plasmonic metal nanoparticles, doped semiconductor nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterials and multifunctional nanohybrids.
- Development of nanomaterial-based applications in chemical and biological sensing, bio-labeling, catalysis, and environmental remediation.
- Natural Product Drug Discovery, Computer-Aided Drug Discovery, and Pharmaceutical & Medicinal Chemistry. Research focuses on the isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds from natural sources, the design and optimization of therapeutic agents using computational tools, and the synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of novel pharmaceutical compounds.
